Random Thought. November 2, 2006

It just struck me that the name ‘Maria’ has some very different connotations in different societies.

For example, in Europe, the name ‘Maria’ can refer to Mary, the Madonna. I’m sure most of you have heard of ‘ave Maria…’

In Singapore, the name ‘Maria’ is a generic name for Filipino maids. As jason lin used to say in his fake Filipino accent…’Hallo my name is Maria, i come from Manila…’

I guess we are quite culturally backward, having no individual culture to fall back on. I guess it’s a perfect example for different meanings of words in different societies. What’s Singaporean culture? Erm. From my viewpoint?

Stressful. Competitive. Materialistic. Elitist in some aspects. But…at least we have great food to compensate! HELL YEAH.
